COLCHICINE

An anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the migration of leukocytes to the

It is a potent medication in alleviating acute symptoms of gout

Colchicine does NOT inhibit uric acid synthesis and does NOT promote uric
acid excretion.

Contraindication: severe renal, cardiac and renal disorders

ALLOPURINOL (Zyloprim®)

It inhibits the
final steps of uric acid biosynthesis thus lower serum uric acid levels.

The drug of choice
for patient with chronic tophaceous gout

This agent is also
prescribed for patient with leukemia and polycythemia vera.
URICOSURICS
probenecid (Benemid®); sulfinpyrazone (Anturane®)
·
Uricosuric
medication induces increase rate of uric acid excretion by inhibiting
reabsorption.
·
This has shown effectiveness in
alleviating chronic gout.
Nursing consideration:
ü Advise patient to take
drugs with food and/or antacids to prevent gastric irritation.
ü Inform patient to increase
fluid intake to promote diuresis and prevent alkalinization of the urine due to
allopurinol medication.
ü Probenecid should not be
used during acute attacks of gout.
ü Aspirin use should be
avoided because it causes uric acid retention.
ü Suggest to patient not to
take vitamin C while taking alluporinol
